بیماران کودک مبتلا به سرطان در طول درمان علائم بسیار آزاردهنده‌ای را تجربه می‌کنند. فرض بر این بود که غربالگری علائم و ارائه گزارش علائم به تیم مراقبت‌های بهداشتی، بار علائم را در بیماران کودک مبتلا به سرطان کاهش می‌دهد.

در این کارآزمایی تصادفی بین ۳۴۵ کودک مبتلا به سرطان در کانادا، پژوهشگران بررسی کردند آیا پایش روزانه علائم توسط ابزار «Symptom Screening in Pediatrics Tool» و ارائه گزارش به تیم مراقبتی باعث کاهش بار علائمی کلی می‌شود یا نه. نتایج نشان داد که پایش منظم به بهبود مدیریت علائم و کاهش بار کلی علائم کمک می‌کند نسبت به درمان معمولی. این موضوع نشان‌دهنده اهمیت ارزیابی فعال علائم در مراقبت از کودکان مبتلا به سرطان است.

Pediatric patients with cancer experience severely bothersome symptoms during treatment. It was hypothesized that symptom screening and provision of symptom reports to the health care team would reduce symptom burden in pediatric patients with cancer.

In this randomized clinical trial involving 345 pediatric cancer patients in Canada, the investigators tested whether daily symptom screening using the Symptom Screening in Pediatrics Tool (and providing reports to the care team) would lead to a lower total symptom burden compared to usual care. Their findings indicate that active symptom monitoring assists in better symptom management and reduces overall symptom burden. This underscores the importance of proactive symptom assessment in pediatric oncology care.
